Weather cancellation policy

The LSL Operational Rules document (linked above) describes the weather cancelation policy (among others), so this is merely to reiterate the basic guidelines:

  1. We DO NOT cancel games based on the weather forecast/radar. We look for reasons to play the game even in less than ideal circumstances. The league rules say to check the local weather forecast but it does not say to cancel a game based on a forecast alone.
  2. The league rule does say to notify 2 hours+ before a game. However, there are going to be times when this is not possible. If the fields are still playable 2 hours before the game, the game should be on. If it downpours an hour before the game and the field becomes unplayable, the game gets cancelled at that time.
  3. After the game starts, it is the home plate umpire who decides if the game should be canceled or not.

So, if you are trying to decide whether to cancel the game ahead of time, here are easy steps to follow:

  1. If it's been pouring rain all day with no sign of stopping 2 hours prior to the game, the fields are almost certainly going to be waterlogged and not playable. OK to cancel.
  2. If Weather Canada issues a severe weather warning affecting Pointe-Claire or Dorval, it's OK to cancel (everyone's safety come first).
  3. In all other cases, check the field (or ask someone to check the field) 2 hours prior to the game. If the field looks playable (e.g. no standing puddles in fair territory), then the game is on, rain or no rain. If you are unable to have someone from your team check the field, you may text/email the field scheduler, who may be able to check with the field attendant from the city.
  4. If the field becomes unplayable during the game, the decision to postpone the match must be taken at the field and is the responsibility of the home plate umpire. If the regulation number of innings has been played, you may not need to reschedule anything.

Dorval will not make a call to close the fields until 1 hour before the event starts, so we cannot rely on them in the decision making. If they close the field you're playing on, please expect to receive that news when you're already there. If that does happen, then the game is cancelled and you must vacate the field. When you email the league notifying them of the cancellation, mention that the field was closed by the city.

Pointe-Claire does not close their fields, so it's the decision of the head coach for the home team.
